රත්නපුර නගර මධ්යයේ අභිමානයෙන් නැගී සිටින බෞද්ධ මන්දිරය යනු හුදෙක් ගොඩනැගිල්ලක් පමණක් නොව, සබරගමු පුරවරයේ සිංහල බෞද්ධ අනන්යතාවය සුරැකීම වෙනුවෙන් ඇරඹි මහා සටනක ජීවමාන ස්මාරකයකි. මෙහි ඉතිහාසය 1931 වසර දක්වා දිවයයි. එකල රත්නපුර ප්රදේශයේ අධ්යාපන ක්ෂේත්රය විවිධ ආගමික බලපෑම්වලට නතුව තිබූ වටපිටාවක, දේශීය දරුවන්ට බෞද්ධ සාරධර්ම සහිත අධ්යාපනයක් ලබා දීමේ දැඩි අවශ්යතාවයක් පැන නැගුණි.
මෙම ජාතික මෙහෙවරේ පුරෝගාමීන් වූයේ අමරපුර සිරි සද්ධම්මවංශ මහා නිකායේ අතිපූජ්ය බිබිලේ ඥානසිරි හිමියන් සහ ශ්රීමත් අනගාරික ධර්මපාලතුමන්ය. සිංහල බෞද්ධ පාසලක් ආරම්භ කිරීමේ අරමුණින් බිහිවූ මෙම මන්දිරය, එදා සුවිශේෂී කාර්යභාරයන් දෙකක් ඉටු කළේය. එහි බිම් මහල බෞද්ධ ආගමික වතාවත් සහ සංස්කෘතික කටයුතු සඳහා වෙන්වූ අතර, දෙවන මහල සිසු දරුවන්ගේ නැණ පහන් දල්වන “ධර්මපාල පාසල” බවට පත්විය.
The Buddhist Mandiraya, which stands proudly in the heart of Ratnapura city, is not just a building, but a living monument to a great struggle that began to protect the Sinhala Buddhist identity of Sabaragamuwa. Its history dates back to 1931. At that time, in an environment where the education sector in the Ratnapura area was under various religious influences, there was a strong need to provide an education with Buddhist values to local children.
The pioneers of this national mission were the Most Venerable Bibile Gnanasiri Thero of the Amarapura Siri Saddhammawansa Maha Nikaya and Sri Anagarika Dharmapala. This building, which was built with the aim of starting a Sinhala Buddhist school, fulfilled two unique roles at that time. Its ground floor was reserved for Buddhist religious ceremonies and cultural activities, while the second floor became the “Dharmapala School” where the students’ wisdom was ignited.
කාලයාගේ ඇවෑමෙන්, මෙම විද්යාලය වඩාත් පුළුල් සේවාවක් උදෙසා රජයට පවරා දෙන ලදී. එදා පටන් අද දක්වාම, රත්නපුර බෞද්ධ මන්දිරය රත්නපුර සහ ඒ අවට ජනතාවගේ අධ්යාත්මික සුවය සලසන මධ්යස්ථානයක් ලෙසත්, නිදහස් අධ්යාපනයේ සහ බෞද්ධ පුනරුදයේ සංකේතයක් ලෙසත් නොසැලී පවතී. අතීතයේ මුතුන් මිත්තන් අපේක්ෂා කළ ඒ ශිෂ්ඨ සම්පන්න සමාජය ගොඩනැගීමේ පදනම වැටුණේ මෙම ඓතිහාසික මන්දිරයේ සෙවණේය.
Over time, this college was handed over to the government for a wider service. From that time until today, the Ratnapura Buddhist Temple has stood firm as a center for spiritual healing for the people of Ratnapura and its surroundings, and as a symbol of free education and Buddhist renaissance. It was under the shadow of this historic temple that the foundation for building the civilized society that our ancestors had envisioned in the past was laid.
ධර්මපාල විද්යාලය රජයට පවරා දීමෙන් පසුව ද රත්නපුර බෞද්ධ මන්දිරය සිය ජාතික මෙහෙවර අත්නොහළේය. වර්තමානය වන විට මෙය ප්රදේශයේ දහම් අධ්යාපනයේ කේන්ද්රස්ථානයක් ලෙස ක්රියා කරන අතර, දහස් සංඛ්යාත දරුවන්ගේ ගුණධර්ම පෝෂණය කිරීමට දායක වේ. එමෙන්ම, ප්රදේශයේ විවිධ පොදු සුභසාධක කටයුතු, ආගමික මහෝත්සව සහ සාමාජික සේවාවන් සඳහා මෙම මන්දිරය නිරන්තරයෙන් විවෘතව පවතී.
බිබිලේ ඥානසිරි හිමියන් සහ අනගාරික ධර්මපාලතුමන් එදා දල්වන ලද ඒ ප්රඥාවේ පහන් සිල, අදටත් රත්නපුර බෞද්ධ මන්දිරය තුළින් නොනිවී දැල්වෙමින් පවතී. එය හුදෙක් ගොඩනැගිල්ලක් පමණක් නොව, සබරගමුවේ බෞද්ධ උරුමය අනාගත පරපුර උදෙසා ආරක්ෂා කර දෙන නොමියෙන සිහිවටනයකි. රත්නපුර වැසියන්ගේ හදවත බඳු වූ මෙම ඓතිහාසික මංසල, ලක්වැසි බෞද්ධ ජනතාවගේ ගෞරවාදරයට පාත්ර වූ අනුපමේය සේවාවක් ඉටු කරන පුණ්ය භූමියකි.
Even after the Dharmapala Vidyalaya was handed over to the government, the Ratnapura Buddhist Mandir did not abandon its national mission. Today, it serves as a center for Dhamma education in the area and contributes to nurturing the virtues of thousands of children. Also, this mandir is constantly open for various public welfare activities, religious festivals and community services in the area.
The lamp of wisdom that was lit by Venerable Bibile Gnanasiri Thero and Anagarika Dharmapala still burns brightly today in the Ratnapura Buddhist Mandir. It is not just a building, but an immortal monument that preserves the Buddhist heritage of Sabaragamuwa for future generations. This historical landmark, which is like the heart of the people of Ratnapura, is a sacred place that performs an unparalleled service that is respected by the Buddhist people of Sri Lanka.
